Zum Urteil

EC Panaceo VSV forward Patrick Spannring has been suspended for two games for Checking from Behind.
Patrick Spannring (#61) of EC Panaceo VSV, time 30:40, was involved in an incident deemed Checking from Behind (IIHF Rule 123). The video evidence was sent to the EBEL Player Safety Committee (PSC), which determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline – Category 1 – ‘Careless’.

According to the Arbitrator and having considered the video evidence and ruling of the EBEL PSC, player Patrick Spannring (#61) of EC Panaceo VSV will receive supplementary discipline under rule 123 – Checking from behind.

On December 2nd in Villach an incident occurred involving Villach player #61 Patrick Spannring, which is deemed a Check from Behind.

Patrick Spannring does a soft dump from the center ice area. With the soft dump, he creates a dump and chase play, which is considered a legal and common play. The reason for supplementary discipline – on the dump and chase, Patrick Spannring altered his skating lane slightly, about the top of the face-off circle, which created a skating lane directly behind the opposing player. With the opposing players back # visible and directly in front of Patrick Spannring, the responsibility is with Patrick Spannring to avoid back side contact.

As the video shows, the opposing player did not alter or change his body positioning immediately before contact and had little, to no way of protecting himself from back side contact. Patrick Spannring skating immediately behind did not avoid and instead, delivered a check where the contact was directly to the back # of the opposing player. The opposing player sustained an apparent injury. Patrick Spannring had time to alter his skating lane (angle into opponent), minimize and most important, avoid direct contact to the opponents back. It is not deemed an excessive check, but is deemed a predatory type check.

Effective immediately, Patrick Spannring (#61) is suspended for 2 games.

Key references:

Directly from behind
Did not alter or work to minimize contact
Category 1 – ‚Careless‘
