On March 8th 2019 in Bozen, an incident occurred involving Daniel Catenacci (#7) of HC Alperia Südtirol, deemed checking to the head or neck. The incident was sent to the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga PSC and determined the incident is worthy of supplementary discipline – category 1-Careless. With play developing and a race to a lose puck in the corner, Vienna – #22 Julian Grosslercher is 1st to and plays the puck. (#7) Daniel Catenacci, approaching from a different angle approaches the puck area with no possibility to retrieve the puck and instead must make a defensive play in the form of a body check. The reason for supplementary discipline is the body check is deemed a check to the head. In taking a 90* approach into a body check, the oneness is on the checker to make contact through the use of his shoulder and must make contact to the shoulder or chest of the opposing player. In this case, Catenacci, just before the goal line removed his left arm (bottom hand) from his stick and slightly lowered his body. Upon contact, he turned to use his free (left arm) and elevated slightly into the check. The left elbow of Catenacci made contact with the head area of Grosslercher, which drives his head between Catenacci elbow and the boards. The IIHF Rule 124iii – specifically states: „The player drives or forces the head of an opponent into the protective glass or boards by using any part of his upper body“. Effective immediately, Daniel Catenacci (HC Alperia Südtirol) is suspended for 1 game.
