Originalurteil:

Steinbach Black Wings Linz defender Raphael Wolf got suspended for two games and has to pay a 300€ fee because of an incident deemed as checking to the head or neck area in Tuesday’s game against EC-KAC.

Raphael Wolf (#5) of Steinbach Black Wings Linz, time 37:25 was involved in an incident deemed as an Illegal Check to the Head or Neck (IIHF Rule 48). The video evidence was sent to the bet-at-home ICE Hockey League PSC, which determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline – Category 1 – ‚Careless‘.

According to the Arbitrator and having considered the video evidence and ruling of the bet-at-home ICE Hockey League PSC, Raphael Wolf (#5) of Steinbach Black Wings Linz, will receive supplementary discipline under rule 48 – Ilegal Check to the Head or Neck.

Tuesday night in Klagenfurt, Linz D’Man, #5 Raphael Wolf, was penalized on ice, with a 5min + GM, for an illegal check to the head on Klagenfurt D’man #45 Andrej Tavzelj. The incident was sent to the ICEHL PSC and determined supplementary discipline is required under Category 1 – ‘Careless’.

As the video shows, Tavzelj is corralling a loose puck along the corner boards with Wolf active on the pinch. Immediately after Tavzelj wraps the puck around, Wolf finishes his check with a high, forceful check in which he makes make’s head contact on a hit, that head contact was avoidable. This is an illegal check to the head.

It is important to note that the head takes a great portion of the contact, as Wolf’s shoulder makes clear, forceful contact with the head of Tavzelj. And the head absorbs direct shoulder contact as well as secondary contact with the glass, causing an apparent injury. Further, the head contact on this play is avoidable. Tavzelj remains on a level and consistent plain throughout and does not adjust his speed or head suddenly.

At issue on this play, is Wolf’s angle of approach. While hits from the side and in the corner boards are very common and not deemed illegal, Wolf took an approach directly at Tavzelj who was in a puck passing position. Immediately before contact, Wolf elevated his left shoulder causing initial head impact. If Wolf wants to make this hit legally, he must take an approach that makes contact to the shoulder or chest of the opposing player and stay plain, so that his shoulder does not elevate up and through an opposing player’s head.
