Saturday night in Ljubljana, S.G.Cortina Hafro D’Man #58 Michael Angelo Zanattacrossed checked HK SZ Olimpija Ljubljana forward #81 Rajsar Saso.
As the video shows, the play is in the defending zone of Cortina. Zanattais the 1st player to a loose puck located behind the goal line. Zanattagains puck possession momentarily and chose to shoot the puck as a wrap around, as Saso is skating towards Zanatta.Saso approached Zanattain a non-aggressive manner, without any form of intimidating body actions.
When Zanattareleased the puck, his stick momentum did naturally propel around and up. However, Zanatta’s stick did come from a normal shooting motion to a protective manner, which has his stick located horizontally and head height of Saso. The stick of Zanatta did contact Saso directly in the head.
It can be considered that Zanatta’sstick action was reactionary and without intent. In this case it is determined, as for all players, the responsibility is with the person creating the action to avoid recklessly endangering incidents. It has been determined that Zanattawas at minimum, aware of Saso approaching. Saso approached from the front side and in a suspecting manner. Zanattamade a choice to leave his stick high and horizontal, which lead to direct contact to Saso’s head.
Zanatta could have and should have avoided a cross checking motion at the head height of Saso.
