Tuesday night in Vienna; Vienna Capitals Silver defender Lukas Piff (#2) of Vienna Capitals Silver was assessed a 5 minute + GM by the on ice officials for a 1 man fight with EC ‚Die Adler‘ Stadtwerke Kitzbühel forward (#88) Adam Havlik.
As the video shows, Adam Havlik enters the attacking zone with puck possession. As the defender,Lukas Piff engages with Havlik in a 1 on 1 battle. Both Piff and Havlik stay engaged after puck possession and for a considerable amount of time while play is on. At one point Piff does do a non-threateningcross check action which gets the attentionof Havlik, who turns around to face Piff.
It can be considered that Havlik did engage Piff in having a non-engagement in the play and turning to face Piff, but never did Havlik do a body action that was threateningor physically engaging. It can also be assumed that the 2 players were talking with each other when face to face, which is also a common occurrence and no reason for the action Piff did. The action Piff took in a hard, direct blow at the head of Havlik can not be considered normal. A punch directly at the head of a non-willing player is recklessly endangering. From a injury potential,a direct 1 punch to the head of a non-willing player is deemed the same as a CTH. Neither are or can be toleratedand certainly aren’t part of the game.
Havlik did sustain an apparent injury at the time. Did try to return to play later in the same period, but did not continue playing the remainder of the game.
Effective immediately, Lukas Piff (#2) of the Vienna Capitals Silver is suspended for 2 games.
Key references:
– Direct blow to the head
– Recklessly endangering
– Considered category 1
– Careless
– Not a repeat offender
