On February 26th in Graz, an incident occurred involving Graz player #46 Michael Latta and Villach player #91 Renars Krastenbergs, which is deemed boarding. A 5 minute major penalty + Game Misconduct for checking from behind was assessed by the on-ice officials.
As the video shows, with approximately 9 seconds left in the period, off a center ice face-off,#46 Latta gains puck possessions and dumps the puck into the attackingzone. With VSV #20-Brunner retrieving the loose puck and immediately doing a reverse chip, #91 Krastenbergsis positioned to gain possession of the puck. With limited time and space, Krastenbergsalso chips the puck ahead. Following in on the play is Latta, who makes a body check deemed illegal.
The incident was sent to the PSC and determined supplementary discipline is required under boarding. With time running down in the period and recognizing, regardless of Krastenbergsgaining puck possession, he had nothing he could do with the puck. There was no need for this type of body check. It is deemed, Latta took advantage of a player, who no fault of his own, was in a vulnerable position. Instead of working to minimize or avoid excessive contact, Latta chose to take advantage of the situation and body check Krastenbergsin a dangerous manner. The body check causes Krastenbergsto be propelled, head first and violently into the boards. The check, as per the IIHF rule book, is deemed recklessly endangering.
Effectiveimmediately, Michael Latta (#46) of Moser Medical Graz99ers is suspended for 1 game and fined 250.00 Euros.
