Das Original-Urteil:
Daniel Leavens of the HC TIWAG Innsbruck – Die Haie was suspended for two games due to an incident deemed as Illegal Check to the Head or Neck in Saturday´s game against Linz. The Canadian will therefore miss the games on the upcoming weekend against Asiago and Ljubljana.

Daniel Leavens (#26) of HC TIWAG Innsbruck – Die Haie, time 39:45 was involved in an incident deemed as Illegal Check to the Head or Neck (IIHF Rule 48). The video evidence was sent to the win2day ICE Hockey League PSC, which determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline – Category 1 – ‚Careless‘.

Saturday night in Innsbruck, Innsbruck forward #26 Daniel Leavens, was assessed a minor penalty for an illegal check to the head or neck on Linz forward #27 Shawn St-Amant, which caused an apparent injury. As the video shows, St-Amant receives a pass and begins a skating motion to maintain attacking zone penetration, as Leavens is back checking from the neutral zone, St-Amant begins to cut away from the boards, unaware of Leavens. As Leavens approaches, he delivers a hit making the head the main point of contact on a hit where such head contact was deemed avoidable.

This is an illegal check to the head.

It is important to note, 2 important elements of a check to the head were satisfied on this hit. First the head is the main point of contact as the shoulder of Leavens makes contact with the head of St-Amant and it is the head that absorbs the majority of the force of this hit. Second, the head contact on this play is avoidable. Leavens choice and angle of approach is a lane that cuts across the front of St-Amant body, missing his body and picking the head. If Leavens wants to deliver this hit, he must choose an angle that leads to body to body contact, rather than one that makes the head the main point of contact.

The ICE Hockey League Department of Player Safety has suspended Daniel Leavens for 2 games and fined 400.00 euros. In addition, for the duration of Daniel Leaven’s suspension HC TIWAG Innsbruck – Die Haie also loses one (1) spot for non-domestic players on the game sheet.

To summarize:
1) This is an illegal check to the head
2) Opponents head is main point of contact
3) Resulted in an injury

Previous suspension:
none
