Cole Hults of the HCB Südtirol Alperia got suspended for one game due to an incident deemed as Spearing. The next game the 24-year-old is allowed to play is on October 21st against Asiago.

Cole Hults (#98) of HCB Südtirol Alperia, time 26:34 was involved in an incident deemed as Spearing (IIHF Rule 62). The video evidence was sent to the win2day ICE Hockey League PSC, which determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline – Category 1 – ‚Careless‘.

Friday night in Bozen, Bozen D’Man #98 Cole Hults was assessed a 5-minute Major and Game-Misconduct penalty for spearing Graz D’Man #9 Aleksi Salonen, resulting in no apparent injury.

As the video shows, with Hults down on the ice, he engages in a 1 on 1 battle with Salonen. After an exchange between both players and Salonen giving a light shove to the shoulder of Hults, he stands up, turns and delivers a spear directly to the mid section of Salonen.

It is important to note, stick use and infractions are common within hockey, with rare exceptions, most of these plays can besignificantly penalized by the on-ice officials. What causes this play to rise to the level of supplemental discipline is the intent, location and use of the end of the blade of the stick to propel force to the mid section of Salonen. This in not accidental or inadvertent contact, this is not contact that the opponent can or should prepare for and this is not what a stick is intended for in the game of hockey. Hults intentionally drives his stick up and into the mid section of Salonen with a forceful push to a vulnerable area of an opposing player.

The ICE Hockey League Department of Player Safety has suspended Cole Hults for 1 game and fined 200.00 euros. In addition, for the duration of Cole Hult’s suspension HCB Südtirol Alperia also loses one (1) spot for non-domestic players on the game sheet.
