Mario Huber of the EC Red Bull Salzburg was suspended for one game due to an incident in Thursday’s home game against HK SZ Olimpija deemed as illegal check to the head or neck (IIHF Rule 48) and additionally fined 200.00 euros.
Mario Huber (#96) of EC Red Bull Salzburg, time 30:57 was involved in an incident deemed as Illegal check to the head or neck (IIHF Rule 48). The video evidence was sent to the win2day ICE Hockey League PSC, which determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline – Category 1 – ‚Careless‘.
Thursday night in Salzburg , Salzburg forward #96 Mario Huber was assessed a 5-minute major plus game misconduct penalty for delivering an illegal check to the head on Ljubljana D-Man #17 Ziga Pavlin.
As the video shows, Huber makes a defensive play on the Ljubljana puck carrier creating a loose puck, in which Pavlin picks up. As Pavlin begins to skate up ice, Huber delivers a high, hard heck that cuts in front of Pavlin’s core, making his head the main point of contact on a hit where such head contact was avoidable.
This is an illegal check to the head.
It is important to note, both elements of an illegal check to the head rule are satisfied on this play. First, the head is the main point of contact as Huber’s shoulder makes direct contact with Pavlin’s head and it is the head that absorbs the majority of the force of the check. Second, the head contact on this play is avoidable. Huber miss timed this play slightly using an angle of approach that cuts across the front of Pavlin’s body initially missing his core and picking his head. If Huber wants to deliver this hit, he must stay low and chose an angle that hits through Pavlin’s shoulder and core, rather than one that makes the head the main point of contact.
The ICE Hockey League Department of Player Safety has suspended Mario Huber (#96) of EC Red Bull Salzburg for 1 game and fined 200.00 euros.
To summarize:
This is Illegal check to the head
Opponent’s head is the main point of contact
