Das Original-Urteil
Graham Knott of the Steinbach Black Wings Linz has been reprimanded and further fined € 200,00 for Cross-Checking (IIHF Rule 59) in Saturday’s home game against EC Red Bull Salzburg is now considered a repeat offender for the remainder of the 2023/24 season.
Graham Knott (#49) of STEINBACH Black Wings Linz, time 26:32 was involved in an incident deemed as Cross-Checking (IIHF Rule 59). The video evidence was sent to the win2day ICE Hockey League PSC, which determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline – Category 1A – ‚Careless‘.
Saturday night in Linz, Linz forward #49 Graham Knott was involved in an incident deemed as cross-checking on Salzburg center-man #9 Ali Wukovits. Resulting in a 2-minute minor penalty being assessed by the on-ice officials.
As the video show, the puck enters the side wall and a race for the loose puck between Wukovits and Knott begins. With Wukovits aware of Knott following, it is deemed Wukovits engages Knott first by altering his skating lane and raising his right arm in the direction of Knott. There is nothing illegal about what Wukovits did. But does appear to be the trigger point to when and possibly why Knott elevated his stick up. After raising his stick, Knott followed through with his stick horizontal in a manner that is deemed overly aggressive.
This is cross checking.
What is important to note is the use of the stick to either impede or deliver force to an opponent is the responsibility of the person delivering the infraction. In this case and specifically, Knott raised his stick up to either prepare for a possibility of Wukovits continuing his motion at Knott or to protect himself. Regardless, this action is deemed okay. The reason for supplementary discipline is Knott immediately after, continued in a follow through motion, by extending his stick horizontally, at a height in line with the opponents’ shoulders and close to the head and neck area. The force of the cross check is deemed overly aggressive and deemed more than an effort to protect himself.
The ICE Hockey League Department of Player Safety has reprimanded Graham Knott and fined 200,00 euros. He is now considered a repeat offender for the remainder of the 2023/24 season.
